SPORT CULTURE and MEDIA | 3 lectio by Flavio Tranquillo on: Sports Culture, Media and Sport Business | Sport, rhetoric and reality. Part 2: Politics

SPEAKER:

Flavio Tranquillo (Journalist | SKY SPORT)

He graduated from the Liceo Ginnasio Tito Livio in Milan and attended the Faculty of Economics and Business at the Luigi Bocconi Commercial University. During his high school and university years he was active as a federal basketball referee in the youth and minor leagues of Milan (later he was also coach of Ars Milano). At the same time, he began to collaborate with specialized publications dedicated to American football and basketball, in particular with the magazine Superbasket, at the time directed by Aldo Giordani. He began his radio career in 1981 at Radio Press Panda, temporarily replacing the then radio commentator for Olimpia Milano matches, Federico Buffa, who was away in the United States at the time. Upon his return from the USA, Buffa allowed him to remain as second voice (a few years later the roles were reversed). After further experiences in radio at Radio Peter Flowers and Novaradio, he made his television debut in 1985 and became production delegate for American sports on the then Fininvest networks (currently Mediaset). He later became a journalist and commentator for Italia 1, TV Koper Capodistria, Tele+. He currently works for SKY Sport. He is part of the “historical” nucleus that began the Tele + adventure on 19 August 1991, which later evolved into SKY Sport. From December 1998 to June 2000 he was communications manager of the Basketball League, while continuing to collaborate with Tele+ for NBA commentary.  For many years he also commented on NCAA university basketball alongside Francesco Anchisi and on NFL football alongside Lino Benezzoli, Sergio Angona and Bebo Nori before handing over this role to Paolo Leopizzi and dedicating himself completely and permanently to basketball commentary, with the main matches of the Serie A championship and the Italian Cup, the most important matches of the Euroleague and NBA, in the latter case accompanied by the 1995-1996 season up to the 2012/2013 season by the technical commentary of Federico Buffa and then by the 2013 season /2014 from that of Davide Pessina.  His voice is also linked to the Italian national basketball team which he followed as a correspondent and commentator in France in the victorious European Championship in 1999, in Sweden in the 2003 edition where the national team achieved third place which allowed it to qualify for the Olympic Tournament in Athens 2004 and at the 2015 European Championship in which the Azzurri finished in 5th place.  In 2010 he appeared in bookstores as a writer with the book The ten steps. Small breviary on legality; and From zero to eight in which he participates in Danilo Gallinari’s autobiography. In 2014 his third book Altro shooter, another tour, another gift was released. His fourth book Basketball R-evolution was released on April 21, 2016. Since November 2015 he has made his debut on Radio Deejay, where every Sunday evening he hosts American Hero, half-hour monographs dedicated to famous American sportsmen. He has two twin sons, Francesco and Michele.
